It’s a bird, it’s a… it’s a butterfly!
Between 2021 and 2023, I worked as a film editor at Singing Frog Studio on their new 3D animated feature “Butterfly Tale”.
The movie, a co-production between Quebec and Germany, is written by Heidi Foss & Lienne Sawatsky and is directed by Sophie Roy.
Butterfly Tale had quite a journey in the editing room.
It started as an animatic, then went to previz, then back in animatic again, to finish in a hybrid version of the two. I started to work on it while the movie was still entirely living in Storyboard Pro in that hybrid stage. Robert Yates did the first version of the cut before I arrived on the project. He and I already worked together on the movie Fireheart.
I was hired as Robert choose to work on something different. It took Sophie Roy (the director) and I two months to lock the animatic/previz in Storyboard Pro. Working in that software was a first for me and I realize how painful but powerful its editing capabilities can be.
The project was then transferred in Adobe Premiere Pro. Sophie and I continue to work together for about a year and a half, throughout the 2D > 3D transition and reworked most of the sequences.
After the movie went picture locked, I stayed on the project to help with the different updates and mastering preparations.
